Stanley – Allegro Andante: Preview

Stanley – Allegro Andante
£13 A charmingly elegant movement from John Stanley’s 6th Solo for flute, which provides recorder players with a lovely addition to our repertoire from the early classical period. Plenty to enjoy, no really difficult passage-work to negotiate; so the focus is on developing poised, elegant articulation; and neat finger work which enables the ornaments (simple or fuller) to remain light and graceful. Due to offering two levels of ornamentation this tutorial is a little longer than usual – why not start with the simple but effective option, then progress to the more complex ornaments when you feel ready? Couperin – Canaries & Double, Part 1: Descant or Tenor
Part one: £10 | Package of both tutorials: £15 These tutorials look at a poignant Canaries by Francois Couperin, together with its Double variation. Part 1 looks at the overall style and introduces playing inegale, but uses just a few, simple ornaments. Part 2 introduces more complex ornamentation, based on Couperin’s original, so is more authentic but requires a higher degree of dexterity. Whether you stay with the simpler version or add the extra ornaments, our goal is to transport us back to the supremely mannered world of Versailles during the reign of Louise XIV. In this preview I demonstrate the simpler, Part 1 version the first time round, but use the Part 2 ‘Suggested Performance’ score on the repeats. I have absolutely loved exploring and playing this Canaries, I hope you do too. Recorder Practice Book: Grade 5 Descant or tenor |

Telemann – Aria 6 from Partita No. 1: Descant or Tenor
£10 A light-hearted, slightly quirky movement from the first of Telemann’s Six Partitas. This ‘Aria’ suits the descant really well but also fits the tenor just fine. The focus is on accurately playing a duplet rhythm across a 3/8 bar; also practise methods to help you neatly negotiate an extended passage of continuous semiquavers whilst playing in two flats. Ezra Read – Golden Hours: Treble
£10 A boisterous ‘barn dance’ from the Edwardian music hall. It may be in the Grade 4 book, but up-to-tempo this could also provide a fun work-out for more advanced players. The focus will be on developing a cheeky, tongue-in-cheek interpretation; swinging the dotted rhythms, negotiating some easy key changes and a brief introduction to one or two ‘special effects’, including the ‘wah-wah’! Two Playford Dances – Black & Grey; The 29th of May: Descant or Tenor
£12 A longer tutorial, exploring two contrasting dances from Playford’s Dancing Master. Black and Grey, is a really fun, foot stomper of a rant so plenty of articulation detail to look at here. The 29th of May is better known as the children’s hymn, All things bright & beautiful, but was originally a 17thC dance which was also used as a ballad tune. We will look at ways of producing a playing edition from these two versions of the same tune, whilst attempting to throw out of the window our aural memory of the decorous Victorian hymn tune.
