A dedicated teacher, Mary began giving lessons at the age of sixteen and has been in demand ever since, enthusing dozens of adults and children over the years.
She teaches in her studio just outside Durham City; on summer schools; at residential weekends; and elsewhere by arrangement. In addition to her one-to-one teaching Mary is also well known and respected as a conductor of recorder ensembles and as a tutor of chamber groups.
Whilst specialising in early music Mary also enjoys playing and teaching contemporary music, be it influenced by popular music, jazz or in considerably more avant-garde and experimental styles. She is particularly interested in the links between folk and ‘art’ music.
A combination of artistic experimentation founded on secure technical knowledge and skills has become a trademark of Mary’s teaching and performing, informed by her own experiences with music in both formal and informal settings. She teaches all ages and abilities, and particularly enjoys enabling enthusiastic adult amateurs to fuel their ambitions and celebrate their music making.
"Mary Tyers was able to add to pieces I thought I knew.”
Since completing her MMus Mary has been in demand as a tutor on residential courses for adult amateur musicians. These include NORVIS (Northumbrian Recorder and Viol International Summer School) , HISS (Historically Informed Summer School for early music and folk music enthusiasts), Parcevall Hall (recorder ensemble weekend for intermediate players) and, starting in 2018, Rydal Hall (also for recorder ensembles).
Mary founded and continues to be Musical Director of the Durham branch of the Society of Recorder Players and is a member of the SRP National panel of Visiting Conductors. She is in demand to lead workshops and conducts at National Festivals. In 2015 she was awarded the SRP Certificate in recognition of long-standing service to recorder playing.
