Bach – Courante: Preview

Bach – Courant: Treble
£10 A joyfully effervescent movement, transcribed from Bach’s First Cello Suite. Technically challenging (although not quite as difficult as it may first sound because the transcription is in the recorder friendly key of G major). Heart lifting and deeply rewarding, once you have mastered the notes. We will look at a variety of practice methods to help get the notes under the fingers; and consider some of the options for managing the breathing, articulation and octave transpositions necessary when moving this glorious dance from the cello to the treble recorder. This music is simply too good to be left just for the cellists to enjoy! Recorder Practice Book: Grade 7 Treble |

Couperin – Canaries & Double, Part 2: Descant or Tenor
Part two: £10 | Package of both tutorials: £15 These tutorials look at a poignant Canaries by Francois Couperin, together with its Double variation. Part 1 looks at the overall style and introduces playing inegale, but uses just a few, simple ornaments. Part 2 introduces more complex ornamentation, based on Couperin’s original, so is more authentic but requires a higher degree of dexterity. Whether you stay with the simpler version or add the extra ornaments, our goal is to transport us back to the supremely mannered world of Versailles during the reign of Louise XIV. In this preview I demonstrate the simpler, Part 1 version the first time round, but use the Part 2 ‘Suggested Performance’ score on the repeats. I have absolutely loved exploring and playing this Canaries, I hope you do too. Recorder Practice Book: Grade 5 Descant or tenor |

Handel – Allegro from Suite VII: Descant or Tenor
£10 A typically ebullient Handel Allegro, transcribed from his 7 th Suite for Harpsichord. The focus is on practice methods which help you develop cleanly fingered and articulated semiquaver passage work; we also look at ways to make the underlying harmonic structure and the shape of the melodic phrases clear to player and listener alike. Weiss – Gigue: Treble
£10 If Weiss’s music was good enough for JS Bach to transcribe it must also be worthy of our attention. The focus will be on ways to recognise and differentiate melody and accompanying figures when both are contained within a single line of music, also on developing fluency in extended passage work. This tutorial might also be enjoyed lower intermediate players who are content to drop the tempo a little. Recorder Practice Book: Grade 6 Treble |
Dancla – Little Polonaise: Preview

Dancla – Little Polonaise
£10 A delightfully elegant 19thC Polonaise, by the French violin teacher and composer, Charles Dancla. This transcription creates a charming show piece for recorder. Our focus will be on creating a lush, romantic 19thC style; exploring articulation patterns which suit the recorder, whilst remaining true to the intention of the original violin version; plus some practice methods to help gain confidence, clarity and a carefree elegance in the handful of more difficult flourishes.
